The balanced act
You can never replace the human touch and established methods with technology, however while new technology cannot replace the essentially human process of high-quality translation, we do make use of computer-aided localisation tools, such as translation memory, terminology management, quality control systems and machine translation, to leverage repeated text and maintain quality and consistency throughout a project and deliver on time every time.
Through experience, Baltic VIP has learnt to balance man and machine in a complementing fashion.
Dictionaries
Baltic VIP has access to a wealth of software and printed dictionaries which ensure that we select the correct terminology during the translation process.
Translation Memory (TM)
It is important to make the distinction between machine translation and translation memory tools. To date, no computer programs have been able to successfully handle the complexities posed by the process of translation.
However, what technology has provided are powerful translation memory software tools, which enable human translators to work more efficiently and with more consistency throughout the project.
During a translation, translation memory takes every sentence and phrase translated and stores it in a bilingual database. For every subsequent reoccurrence of a particular sentence, or in most cases, a sentence fragment, the translator is automatically provided with the translation stored in memory. The translator then chooses whether to accept this translation if it is a 100% match or edit it in such a way that renders it acceptable. These tools dramatically improve on the quality and consistencies of the translation.
